Over the past several years, the outdoor room has continued to grow in popularity and necessity in both commercial and residential segments. A recent survey by Dwell found that outdoor space was the top feature request by millennials when buying a home. The ASID also reported, “As technology consumes more of their time and invades every area of their lives, homeowners also want their home to be a haven where they can relax and spend time with family and friends.” In light of the growth that is happening in regards to outdoor spaces, here are three key outdoor furniture trends Oxford Garden sees for the 2016 season.
Transforming Outdoors
Extending the indoors outside is a fast growing trend. Outdoor spaces are being incorporated from the beginning into the design plans of homes and commercial entities. The outdoor experience is helping drive concepts as well. Kristine Gregonis, associate principal, Degen & Degen, commented in a recent issue of Hotel Business, “The big trend I’m seeing is the turning of buildings inside out, which is happening in all sectors of construction: the prevalence of the outdoor living room, outdoor bedrooms and outdoor kitchens.”
Conversation Habits
One of the rising segments of outdoor design in recent years has been conversation groups. Studies by Casual Living have found chat groups to be the third largest and most rapidly growing segment of the outdoor industry. Modular seating provides flexibility, enhancing and bringing comfort to outdoor spaces of any dimension. Bill McBain, president, Hospitality Purchasing Consultants, noted in Hotel Business that “many properties…[are]…adding lounge/conversation areas,” indicating strong commercial appeal as well.
Low-Maintenance Versatility
With the tremendous growth of outdoor spaces throughout both residential and commercial design, proper material selection should be considered. Durable, low-maintenance products ensure longevity in tough commercial environments. David Crouch, senior of operations, corporate, Aqua-Aston Hospitality, encouraged in Hotel Business for designers and purchasers to “Spend the money for more durable materials…and purchase furniture that has easy to replace straps or slings to extend the life.” Another important feature to regard is stackability and mobility for high traffic areas or easy storage.
